The University of Arkansas, whose main campus is situated in Fayetteville, sits on a former hilltop farm overlooking the Ozark Mountains. When the college was founded in 1871, the site in Fayetteville was described as "2nd to none in the state of Arkansas." The school is the major land-grant university and the state university for Arkansas. The college came was established under the Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862. This act demanded that federal land sales provide funds for new colleges devoted to "agriculture and the mechanic arts," "scientific and classical studies," and "military tactics" for the "liberal and practical education of the industrial classes."
